Just got the keys to my first flat! 🎉 Absolutely buzzing but slightly terrified about how much stuff I need to buy. Can anyone help with: 1. What are the absolute essentials for the first week? 2. Best places to find furniture deals without spending a fortune? 3. Any hidden costs I should budget for? I've got about £3k to kit the whole place out (1 bed flat). Is that realistic?

Congrats! £3k is absolutely doable for a 1 bed. Here's my first week essentials list: **Day 1 non-negotiables:** - Bed + mattress (don't cheap out here — IKEA Nesttun frame £89 + Hovag mattress £299 is a great combo) - Bedding set (Dunelm do great value ones from £15) - Towels - Toilet roll, cleaning spray, bin bags - Kettle and a couple of mugs **Week 1:** - Sofa — Facebook Marketplace is your friend. People practically give them away - Washing machine — check Currys outlet, ex-display models are half price - Basic kitchen stuff — IKEA VARDAGEN set is like £30 for pans, utensils, the lot Don't buy everything at once. Live in the place for a few weeks and you'll figure out what you actually need vs what you think you need.

Hidden costs nobody tells you about: - **Council tax** — hits immediately, budget £100-150/month depending on area - **Contents insurance** — get this ASAP, about £10-15/month - **TV licence** — £169.50/year if you need one - **Bins** — some councils charge for green/food waste bins - **Curtains/blinds** — weirdly expensive. IKEA SCHOTTIS blinds at £3 each are a lifesaver while you sort proper ones For furniture deals, always check: 1. **Facebook Marketplace** — free/cheap stuff constantly 2. **British Heart Foundation furniture shops** — surprisingly good stuff 3. **Dunelm clearance** — in-store only, absolute bargains 4. **IKEA As-Is section** — ex-display at 50-70% off

One thing I wish someone had told me — **don't buy a brand new sofa**. I spent £800 on a DFS sofa for my first place and sold it 2 years later for £50 when I moved. Get a decent second hand one for £50-100 from Facebook Marketplace. Spend the £700 you saved on a really good mattress instead. Your back will thank you. Also register with **Olio** — people give away amazing stuff when they move. I got a nearly new Dyson, full set of Le Creuset pans, and a solid oak bookcase all for free.

My budget breakdown for a 1 bed (what I actually spent): | Item | Cost | |------|------| | Bed frame + mattress | £400 | | Sofa (FB Marketplace) | £60 | | Washing machine (Currys outlet) | £180 | | Fridge freezer (Currys outlet) | £150 | | IKEA kitchen bundle | £80 | | Dunelm bedding + towels + curtains | £120 | | Microwave (Argos) | £40 | | Hoover (Amazon) | £60 | | Misc (cleaning, bathroom, bits) | £150 | | **Total** | **£1,240** | Had about £1,800 left over as an emergency fund which saved me when the boiler packed in month 2. Always keep a buffer! 💪

Pro tip: sign up for **Freecycle** and your local **Buy Nothing** Facebook group before you move in. Post that you're moving into your first place and people are incredibly generous. I got a microwave, ironing board, full set of plates and glasses, and a coffee table all free from neighbours who were decluttering. People love helping first-time buyers.
